The Central Bank of Syria has released a new high-denomination banknote that features the face of president Bashar al-Assad.

On Monday, the country’s state news agency reported that the new 2,000 Syrian pound ($4) – the largest banknote now in circulation – was released on July 2.

In a statement prepared for a press conference, published in Arabic by the central bank, governor Duraid Durgham said the new notes were released to combat the “wear and tear” of current notes in circulation.
