NGO warns of unintended effects of US sanctions on Hamas

Charity says measures will stymie bank lending to reputable non-profits

The US branch of a global charity has told Central Banking that the Treasury department’s latest sanctions on organisations with alleged links to Hamas will have a “chilling effect” on bank lending to legitimate non-profit organisations.

On October 7 – the first anniversary of the attacks by Hamas that triggered the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Gaza-based militant group – the US Treasury sanctioned charities and individuals it said were linked to terrorist financing.
