Bank Negara Malaysia seeks to limit superfluous supply of banknotes
Bank Negara Malaysia is seeking to reduce the number of new banknotes that are exchanged by the public during Hari Raya Aidilfitri – the celebration that marks the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan – by handing out "high-quality" notes in their place.
One of the customs involved in the celebration is duit raya – a charitable tradition where people exchange cash in colourful green packets with their relatives or members of their community.
This commonly involves the use of brand new banknotes
