Ukraine nationalises country’s largest bank
Gontareva says PrivatBank failed repeatedly to take necessary action
The government and National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) have stepped in to rescue the country's largest lender, PrivatBank, citing the continuing failure of the bank's management to turn the institution around.
The government agreed on December 18 to purchase a 100% stake in the lender and provide the funds necessary for recapitalisation. The decision will allow the bank to continue operating, and will protect the estimated 20 million Ukrainians who use its services, the NBU says.
