Senior members of the European Central Bank's (ECB) governing council have sought to address fears that the bank's unconventional monetary policy is harming some European – and specifically German – citizens.

German politicians and media outlets have recently been critical of the ECB's policies, with many arguing that savers are suffering as a result of low interest rates. Deutsche Bundesbank president Jens Weidmann is believed to be a strong opponent of extending bond purchases beyond March
