Demetriades resigns as Cyprus governor

Exit comes after repeated conflict with government and within central bank

Panicos Demetriades has resigned as Central Bank of Cyprus governor today, after spending less than two years in the job.

The Cypriot president Nicos Anastasiades released a statement accepting Demetriades' resignation, and thanked the departing governor for his "great effort" in rescuing the country from bankruptcy and stabilising the financial sector.

Anastasiades was, however, one of the main sources of turbulence during Demetriades' tenure – having sought to dilute his power on one occasion
