EBA report finds banks €199 billion short of Basel target
The largest banks in Europe are €199 billion ($257 billion) below capital requirements targeted in Basel III regulation, the European Banking Authority (EBA) revealed on September 27.
A report of the ongoing EBA monitoring exercise shows that banks remain some way short of meeting the common equity Tier I (CET1) rules.
By 2019, ‘group 1' banks must achieve the minimum requirement of holding 4.5% of the best quality Tier I capital, and there is currently a shortfall of €8 billion ($10 billion)
