US senator renews call for ‘crippling’ sanctions on Central Bank of Iran

Republican senator Mark Kirk on Thursday filed an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, which would impose "crippling" sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran, in his latest attempt to try and cut funding to the country's nuclear weapons development programme.

The Kirk amendment is a reaction to the report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which concluded that Iran is engaged in activities "highly relevant to a nuclear weapons program".
