New deputy governor to South African Reserve Bank
Dr Guma took up his position yesterday, 1 August. The position of deputy governor was made vacant in April 2001 by the retirement of Tim Thahane.
The bank has three deputy governors in total. Dr Guma joins Gill Marcus and James Cross in the post.
In a statement released late on 29 July, Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni said the appointment is for a period of five years.
Guma was born 20 Jan. 1957 in Alice in South Africa's Eastern Cape, and joined the South African Reserve Bank in July 1995 as an economist. He was promoted to Deputy Head of the Research Department in January 1997.
In December 1999 he was appointed as Head of the Policy Development and Review Division in the same department, and became advisor to the governors 15 March, 2000.
