Lifetime achievement award: Jacques de Larosière
The great French public servant and central banker of his generation
Jacques de Larosière became a specialist in monetary issues soon after joining the Ministry of Finance in Paris (see box below). By the time he was in his thirties, he was running external finance. He worked with Georges Pompidou, who became president of France after the departure of Charles de Gaulle in 1969 and especially closely with Valery Giscard d’Estaing, who was finance minister from 1969 to 1974 and then president.
