Supra-national stress tests less common in middle income countries

Most central banks conduct stress tests of banks more than once a year

Central banks from middle income countries are less likely to engage in stress tests carried out by supra-national regulators, the Financial Stability Benchmarks 2024 find.

Across the whole sample, around a third (32.4%) of 34 respondents say they are involved in stress tests of lenders performed by another supra-national regulator. A clear majority (67.6%) of respondents say they do not.

The gap is even wider in the middle income category of central banks. Only three (23.1%) of 13 upper-middle
