Economics department staff total just over 70 on average

Average number of research economists remains smaller than policy economists

Economics departments of central banks tend to have around 70 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees on average, the Economics Benchmarks 2023 reveal.

The data shows an average of 72.2 FTE staff work in economics departments across 33 respondent central banks. A high income American central bank reports the maximum of 650 – the institution mentions these staff are spread across seven different economics departments, and the figure includes administrative staff.
