Half of central banks recycle banknotes as sustainability measure

Most currency operations lack climate strategy, but a few plan to launch one

Just over half of central banks are taking steps to ensure sustainability in banknote printing by recycling, the Currency Benchmarks 2024 find.

Eighteen (52.9%) of 34 respondents ticked recycling of banknotes as a sustainable printing measure they are taking. Sixteen (47.1%) currency departments say they are “using more sustainable materials”. Five (14.7%) central banks selected “other” means, while no step is being taken in 14.7% of institutions.
