Fijian governor welcomes banking competition

Barry Whiteside, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, said the country's banking industry is open to new entrants following the November 3 launch of the country's first new bank built "from scratch" since 1993.

At the opening of Bred bank, a subsidiary of a French co-operative, Whiteside rejected the notion that Fiji is sufficiently banked and said there is no policy limiting the number of participants in the industry. "It is expected that customers will benefit from healthy competition
