Sarb will take ‘defensive posture’ to debt downgrade, says Ballim

South Africa’s central bank is unlikely to respond to the country’s junk debt status unless rand volatility starts to hit prices

The chief economist at one of South Africa’s largest commercial bank believes the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) will take a “defensive posture” in responding to the recent downgrade of the nation’s sovereign debt.
