China overtakes Japan as world’s second largest economy

China has officially overtaken Japan as the world's second-largest economy.

Figures from the Japanese Cabinet Office out Monday showed that Japan's GDP for the three months to June was $1.29 trillion against China's $1.34 trillion.

China had long been expected to supersede Japan as the world's second-largest economy. The news follows comments by Yi Gang, a vice governor of the People's Bank of China and the head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (Safe), made earlier this month that
